. >> let's get to tucker barnes and get the latest on the weather, what is going on now and also sandy. you start with whatever you want. it is up to you. >> thank you. let's go become to sandy real quick. still a hurricane. category one hurricane. maximum winds 80 miles per hour moving off to the northwest at 13. so remains intact. you can see the satellite signature not as impressive as it was 24 hours ago when it was emerging off the coast of cuba but this is still a very strong storm and as it pushes to the north and west, it is forecast to interact with what we call a little short wave, some much colder air and as it does so, that will reenergize as it gets up into the mid-atlantic. that is why we're concerned. time frame for us as the storm gets closer will be the second half of sunday, monday and tuesday. we'll be just fine today. we'll have no issues tomorrow. this will be the second half of sunday, monday and tuesday when things will start to fall apart. that will be gusty wind around here, likely locally very heavy rain as well. let's do some local forecasting as well.

weather with tucker barnes. >> we have this front laud up across the area. you can see it right across generally the 95 corridor and that is allowing a lot of fog to develop. visibilities in many spots quarter mile or less. it feels a little eerie out there. eventually later today, we'll see the fog break up. highs expected in the mid-80s today. before cool are weather on the way for the weekend. otherwise, i don't think we'll see a whole lot of rain today. we should start to see things quiet down as far as rain and rain totals. gradual improvement. we do have the morning fog and we do have some relatively warm temperatures. 71 at reagan national. more details on the weather in just a second. back to you at the desk. >> all right, tucker. thank you very much. president barack obama and mitt romney will take center stage tonight in denver for the first of three presidential debates. the candidates are expected to focus on domestic issues, particularly the economy during the debate. there are nine electoral votes up for grabs in colorado making it a key prize for both candidates.

sarah simmons. let's check in with tucker barnes to get the latest on your weather. it looked like it was a little foggy or a little thick out there. we still have a little humidity across the area. we don't have the heavy fog but still a little bit of haze and humidity and very mild temperatures for this time of year. >> no thick fog like yesterday. >> only in a few spots. not nearly as widespread as it was yesterday. we are dealing with some rain showers. let's get to those. generally, washington and points west but this little batch of rain has been moving to the east here over the last couple of hours. it is now very close to the district here, reston, as you get out towards leesburg, had a sprinkle or two and then a little batch there just south of the city as you work down 95 between generally washington and fredericksburg. we are getting some rain showers as well. that will be crossing the potomac and over towards waldorf and la plata here before long. this is all associated with this frontal system that has been moving oh, so slowly and will continue to kind of track east d

had rain in the area as well. let's check in with tucker barnes and see what the status is. >> good morning. still seeing heavy rain to the south of the city, in fact. thunderstorm activity down there as well. good news is things should be winding down shortly. still have to deal with showers ovethe near future here. there you go, much of the area starting to dry out. we've seen this little batch of shower and thunderstorm activity redevelop in the past hour to the south. if you look carefully, you'll see blinking towards la plata and waldorf. and will come eventually into prince george's county to the north and east, towards annapolis and the bay. nice and mild to start your day. good news is once we get rid of this last batch of moisture, we should be looking at just cloud cover here for much of the morning and eventually afternoon sunshine. conditions will improve. 65 at reagan national. 59 at dulles. 64 at bwi marshall. here's your forecast, early showers give way to afternoon sun. temperatures top out in the mid- 70s. nice mild afternoon. more details in a minute, we'll look at

tucker barnes and get the latest on hurricane sandy. you know, we've heard -- we talk about the precise path, the category of the storm. but we're kind of being told not to focus so much on that because it will do a lot more damage than maybe what you think? are we category one? >> we are category one but here is what is amazing. the tropical storm-force winds extend 485 miles from the center. so we are dealing with those winds from the carolinas to maine this morning. we are in the middle of that, of course. it is intensifying. the pressure is falling further. if you are into this kind of thing, down to 946 millibars, which is extremely low pressure. if that is falling, that tells us the storm is getting stronger. >> so it could be worse than we expected? >> i'm not sure it is going to be worse but it is going to as bad as we expected. maximum winds now 85. you get the idea with that pressure falling, it is continuing to do its thing. there is your radar. that is a local look. want to mention that our rain, which has been light in places has become steadier here in the last cou

. man, with this, tucker barps is here. a little bit of everything with this storm. >> yeah, of course, the hybrid nature of the storm we've been talking about, so you get the winter weather out to the west and tropical stuff that went on along the coastlines last night. so the good news is things are winding down. the bad news is we've still got a day of rain and occasionally gusty winds. so winds will get up maybe 40 to 50 miles an hour from time to time during the course of the day. and, of course, with very saturated soil, some trees still could be at risk. so be careful out there later today. there is your radar, rain falling, continuing to fall across the area, been falling all night long. last night many areas picked up five inches of rain. we had all kinds of rain records for the day yesterday. and the rain will continue to fall for much of your day today. i think as we get into the afternoon hours we'll start to see things wind down here a little bit later. but you can see we've got rain south and east of the city here, southeast side there down towards andrews air forc

higher this morning because of the full moon, tucker ws saying about 5% higher. so definitely feeling the impact here. the waves very pretty wild. we did hear that offshore, waste about 21 feet here. eyeballing it, it looks to be upwards of 15 feet. as you were saying yes the water makes its way over the sea wall. there's about four to five inchings of water on the board walk itself right now. police and emergency vehicles are still able to access that, they're actually driving on the board walk because it's easy i think to get around some of the roads are certainly flooded, a lot of high standing water right now. all of the roads shut down below 17th street, and that is the area that's under the mandatory evacuation. about 200 people we were told who choose to remain in their homes despite that mandatory evacuation, and police and fire crews have been out trying to get those folks to leave now and get out of this area, also the same story for some of the lower lying areas that are above 17 17th street but all the roads below are shut down. route 50 closed if you're trying to
